Horton Fishing FAQ'S

You wish to book a venue with us but you have a couple of questions?

In the section below you may read frequenty question asked by our clients. In case your query is not included, you may contact us and we will reply to you as soon as possible.

How will I choose my swims once I have arrived

We think that the choice of swims is very important for a successful fishing holiday : it depends the way you like to fish (short or long range, wind, fish action,...). That is why, we let you choose your own swims when you arrive.

On most of our venues, there are more pegs than the maximum number of anglers allowed, so even for the last person to arrive, there will be several options.
How to proceed on venues booked on individual :

The arrival are at midday. You may arrive slightly earlier but the fishing and choice of swims will only start at midday (4 PM for Watersmeet, Robin Lake and other venues with accomodation) so as to keep the same chances in the choice of the swims for all.
if and only if all the anglers have arrived earlier and if the bailiff has finished the cleaning and if he/she agrees newly arrived guests may set up their bivvy and start fishing before the due time. Should there be a discussion between 2 (or more) anglers who would like to fish the same pegs, in this case there would be a peg draw.

Of course if the anglers arrive after Midday, they will have to choose between the pegs which have not been  chosen before. Some anglers may sometimes arrive at the end of the afternoon and we cannot ask the other anglers to wait until their arrival.
It is not necessary for the anglers to arrive very early as they cannot access  the venue before it is cleaned and the previous group may stay there until 10 AM and enjoy the last moments of their stay.

Exception : We make an exception and authorise pre booking of swims for disabled persons. If this is your case, please contact us. Your disabled card will be asked on site for checking.

Why is there a time of arrival and departure fixed

On most of our venues the time of arrival is Midday and the time of departure is 10AM. The exception is for the venue with accomodation like Robin Lake, Watersmeet and Willow Lodge. There are 2 reasons for that;

1) A time of cleaning is necessary. The bailiff on site needs to clean the facilities and check that the swims are in good condition to greet you. This length of time is a bit longer when a house or a mobile home must be cleaned. We are sure that you appreciate clean facilities as first impressions always count.
2) Without this time indicated, some angler could arrive at 6AM and others leave at 7PM, which means that there would be too many persons at the same time on the venue and a lot of stress. It is never pleasant when you would like to pack up in peace to see that the next team has parked the car behind you and waits with impatient for your departure.

I would like the postcode of the lake for my sat nav

The french postcode system is different to that used in the UK, often a single postcode can cover a vast area and different villages. Hence a postcode could take you to a place quite remote from the venue. The french postcode system is solely attributed to postal delivery, given that few lake owners actually live on the venue site, the postcode becomes quite a useless information.
We indicate the sat nav reference in our information pack provided to you with the last receipt of your payment.

Why do I have to use fresh boilies (no shelf life)

There are two  important reasons for us : that the fish benefit from the best condition for their health and...that you enjoy you stay. These are also the 2 reasons why we ask you to use fresh boilies. They are better for the fish and the fish perfectly knows that...Then your fishing results are usually better. For ever rotting baits on the bottom of the lake are a thing of the past with fresh baits. If a fresh bait is uneated it decomposes and rises to the surface rapidly without detrimental effects to the lake bottom where they were placed. You may use the brand you prefer : Mainline, Nutrabaits, ...;or the France PĂȘche Services boilies sold on site.

Why do I have to use professionnally prepared particles

Particles badly prepared mean dead fish . This happened 5 years ago on one of our venues and has happened to other fisheries in the UK and abroad.
We like our fish and our guests that is why we do not want to see it happen again. We could have decided to simply ban the particles but most of you appreciate their use and results. That is why we ask professionnally prepared (soaked, cooked by a professionnal bait company).
For the experienced anglers, this rules may be hard to accept as they probably know how to soak and cook the particles. However, this is not possible to forbid something to one angler and to authorise the same thing to another one. We want to be fair with everyone.
As carp anglers, you like and respect the fish, so we are sure that you understand these rules.
You may use the brand you prefer : Dynamite Baits, Bait company, Kent Particles...;or the France PĂȘche Services particles sold and sometimes even prepared on site by the lake managers and/or owners.

I would like to take my dog with me

On most of the venues, dogs may be accepted (you may contact us to know if the venue allow dogs or no). The only limits are the French law and the respect of the lake and person on site (bailiff or other anglers).
To bring your dog(s) with you, you need to inform us about the number of dogs, the type, and general behaviour. The dog must be social with other persons and other dogs. According to the case, dogs will be accepted or refused. If we are not informed about the dogs, they will be automatically refused on site.
The dog(s) must be tatooed or chipped, wormed and must have uptodate injections . For dogs coming from England, a visit to the vet before your depature to France and before your departure to england will ne necessary : we may forward you the list of vets around the venue. Some strains in France are considered as dangerous by the law and must wear a mussle. In any case, the dog(s) must remain attached and always watched by their owner. It must not be able to block a path or reach a person passing by the bivvy.
Please also keep in mind that it is never pleasant to arrive on a swim with dog excrement on it. Every dog muck will have to be cleaned before your departure...you may also go for daily walk outside the property with your dog which is always pleasant..for the dog and for his owner.

Even if we have accepted them and in any case, the dogs remain under the sole responsability of their owner. Should we find their behaviour dangerous or suspicious, owners will be asked to remove the dogs from the property.

What can I do if there is a problem on site

Even for a very small problem, you may always call us. We will be happy to help you and we will do our best. We recommend you also to notify the problem to the person on site. Most issues can be solved during your holiday providing we are made aware of the problem. Do not wait to be back home when it is too late...

What can I do if I am ill or hurt during my stay

This situation is very unlucky and unlikely  but we say in France that it is better to prevent it that to remedy it.
Before you departure you need to ask a special Insurance Card. The previous form E111 ceased to be valid on the 31/12/2005. From the 01/01/2006, you need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to receive healthcare that becomes necessary during your visit to an EEA country or Switzerland.
If something happened during your trip, please do not hesitate to give us a ring. We perfectly understand how frustrating one may feel, when a doctor does not speak your language even for a simple cold. We will help you. You may also ask the bailiff on site.

Why do I have to pay damage deposit on Goncourt complex and Botte

We now ask for a damage deposit as we had a small problem in Saules cabin this year and a seriously recurring problem with the theft of oars, lifejackets and other items. We now ask a deposit for oars and row locks as at Goncourt and La Botte, several are lost mysteriously every week. These will be made available to you for your convenience and under your responsability, the deposit will be returned to you on your departure with the return of the items made available to you for the trip
